On Monday, 10 March, the UCT grandstand flooded with students and rugby enthusiasts alike to watch a highly anticipated fixture between the Wits Rugby Club and UCT’s Ikey Tigers.
The game started off slow, but soon enough the Ikeys started notching a few tries, all thanks to their incredibly fast-paced attack. UCT maintained this momentum throughout the first half. Ntokozo Makhaza was a key player, with the winger showing tremendous speed and skill down the touchline. By halftime, the score was 45-0 to the Ikeys, essentially sealing the win for UCT. The splendid atmosphere on the Green Mile aided the home side, who were able to come out on top with a whooping 73-17 win following an 80-minute battle.
For the Ikeys this win is a confidence booster. They should hope to carry the momentum from this stellar performance into their next major fixture against the still-undefeated Stellenbosch on March 17. The team’s tremendous start to the season has garnered a very positive reaction from the UCT community, with hopes growing that the players will be able to get revenge on their longstanding rivals next week.
